  17. I suspect you may have the causal relationship the wrong way round. I believe
  18. schizophrenia is caused by chemical imbalance in the brain, and the symptoms
  19. include hearing voices or hearing your own conscious or subconscious thoughts
  20. spoken to you.  I suspect, therefore, that schizophrenics develop religion
  21. because of their mental illness, rather than the other way around.

  23. Philip K. Dick's book "VALIS" is relevant, here.  It's a semi-fictional
  24. account of Dick's struggle to come to terms with his own religious
  25. experiences, experiences which sound much like the symptoms of mild
  26. schizophrenia.
