  19. that whole statement is hopelessly tangled in self-contradiction,
  20. hermes. the whole idea of wanting to make people cheerful means
  21. wanting to change them. it also assumes that you do people a service
  22. when you make them cheerful (not always true) and that you somehow
  23. have the power to control their moods anyway.

  25. personally, i find few things more annoying than people who assume
  26. that everyone needs to be cheerful all the time and who barge into my
  27. life with a self-given mandate to "cheer me up" without even caring
  28. enough to figure out why i'm down in the first place. balloons and
  29. bubbles are all very nice in their place, but knowing what their place
  30. is seems to be beyond some people.

  49. bleah. i hate sounding like one of the angst.police, because i've
  50. always hated trying to say "this belongs here and that doesn't." but
  51. really, this whole case feels different, i guess because it feels like
  52. being overrun by teen-aged candy stripers when you've just had major
  53. surgery.
