- --------------------------------
- Produced by Interlock Media Associates
-
- >Institutions: VHS Sale $85. Rent $45.
- >Individuals/Low-income groups: VHS Sale $35. Rent $20.
-
- Is a living rain forest of greater economic value than one
- that has been cut down for timber or pastureland? The inter-
- national marketing of foods, cosmetics, and crafts derived
- from tropical forests may provide native inhabitants with the
- economic means to protect their vanishing lands. RAIN FORESTS:
- PROVING THEIR WORTH explores the promising new movement to
- market sustainably collected forest products.
-
- Moving through the landscape of rain forest commerce, PROVING
- THEIR WORTH captures hopeful developments: new groves of peach
- trees reforesting the hills of Costa Rica, bustling markets on
- the Amazon, and environmentally conscious American companies
- successfully using renewable forest products. But obstacles re-
- main: Brazil nut collectors aren't getting fair prices, and the
- trees that once sustained them are being burned for charcoal.
- Some forest inhabitants are concerned that outsiders will bring
- unwelcome change to traditional ways. And Western businesses,
- racing to cash in on public demand for "green" products, could
- easily repeat the abusive practices that marked Amazonia's
- earlier rubber boom.
-
- With stunning visuals, rare archival footage, first person
- accounts, and an original soundtrack, RAIN FORESTS, PROVING
- THEIR WORTH provides a provocative look at a crucial effort
- to save the rain forests and its peoples.
-
- *Narrated by Jane Alexander
-
- *Riena International Environmental Film Festival, France.
-
- "Of all the stories of the Amazon rain forest, this is the
- one that has not yet been told. RAIN FORESTS: PROVING
- THEIR WORTH gives fresh, insider perspectives on the long-
- term prospects for forest survival."

- THE FOREST THROUGH THE TREES 1990 * 58 min.
- ----------------------------
- Produced by Frank Green, Isan Film Group
-
- >Institutions: VHS Sale $85. Rent $45.
- >Individuals/Low-income groups: VHS Sale $39.95 Rent$25.
-
- Northern California's majestic redwood forests are an
- irreplaceable national treasure. While world attention focuses
- on the rapid devastation of tropical rainforests, here in the
- United States the last remaining stands of virgin redwoods in
- private hands are being destroyed at a far greater rate.
-
- THE FOREST THROUGH THE TREES, produced by former NBC news
- bureau chief Frank Green, takes a sobering look at the highly-
- charged battle for the redwoods. The controversial logging
- practices of two timber companies are examined, as are the
- strategies of environmental groups. Loggers, timber executives,
- politicians, environmentalists, and local residents all speak
- passionately of their concerns and interests. But the film
- goes beyond these competing interests to consider alternatives
- to current logging practices, and explore the underlying public
- policy and resource issues that affect us all.
-
- Extraordinary close-ups of the endangered spotted owl and
- rare footage of the marbled murrelet, along with magnificent
- forest scenes, bring the redwoods to life. This is a thought-
- ful, visually spectacular film on a complex issue of national
- importance.
-
- *Narrated by Sidney Pollack, Acadamy Award-winning Director
-
- "Compelling photography, an incredibly timely and up-to-date
- film on the plight of the Northern California redwoods. The
- message is clear--can we preserve this unique national and
- biological resource? A film...that you must see. Use it in
- Biology, Environmental Science, Engineering, and Humanities."

- San Jose University, (California)

- DESERT UNDER SEIGE 1991 * 28 min.
- ------------------
- Produced by Doug Prose
-
- >INSTITUTIONS: VHS Sale $85. Rent $45.
- >INDIVIDUALS/LOW-INCOME GROUPS: VHS Sale $35. Rent $25.
-
- This 28-minute video program portrays the uniqueness and
- beauty of the California desert, and it shows how increasing hu-
- man pressures are threatening many components of the desert's
- fragile ecosystems. A brief history of the human presence in the
- region brings the viewer up to date with the rapid population
- growth fringing the desert's western edge, and the negative envi-
- ronmental effects that this growth is having on the desert.
- Leading desert scientists appear in field and office interviews
- to explain the effects of various human activities on the des-
- ert environment. Activities include: Strip-mining; livestock
- grazing; agriculture; urbanization; off-road vehicle recreation;
- and military training. The plight of the Desert Tortoise, which
- was recently listed as a threatened species,is covered in detail.
-
- A major emphasis of the program is the desert's natural
- beauty. The old way of thinking of the desert as a "wasteland"
- is strongly challenged by images and facts that portray the
- biodiversity of this land. The fragility of the desert, in the
- face of modern technology and population growth, is also empha-
- sized throughtout the program.
-
- The program script, which was carefully written with guidance
- >from a team of science advisors, is read by Ginger Casey of KQED-
- TV, PBS affiliate in San Francisco. An original music score of
- flutes, strings, and ethnic percussion instruments is woven
- throughout the program.

- America and the Moving Images Video Project.

- Central America is celebrated for its lush tropical rain-
- forests, diverse animal life, and fertile volcanic soil--an
- environment that has sustained human civilization for thousands
- of years. But today Central America's natural environment is
- seriously endangered, leading to increased poverty among its
- populace. More than two-thirds of the rainforests have been
- destroyed. Deadly pesticides are exported from the U.S. to
- Central America. Much of the agricultural land is used to
- export cattle and crops to the U.S. and continuing conflicts
- are devastating the land and displacing millions of people.
- ENVIRONMENT UNDER FIRE explores the issues behind this crisis,
- along with potential solutions. Top Central American and U.S.
- environmentalists provide important perspectives. Useful for
- Environmental or Central American Studies.

- OUR THREATENED HERITAGE 1988 * 19 min.
- -----------------------
- Produced by the National Wildlife Federation
-
- >VHS Sale $29.95
-
- Every minute more than 50 acres of tropical forest are
- destroyed or seriously degraded. Several species a day are
- lost to extinction as a result. The death of these forests is
- affecting all of us on earth--accelerating changes in global
- weather, eliminating valuable biological resources for industry
- and medicine, and exacerbating hunger and poverty. OUR
- THREATENED HERITAGE, produced by the nation's largest
- environmental organization, provides a concise overview of the
- destruction of of the rainforests and what can be done to stop
- it. Images of the fascinating wildlife and towering trees are
- vividly presented, along with comments from global experts about
- the causes and potential solutions to the destruction. The link
- between environment and development in the tropics is also
- explored. OUR THREATENED HERITAGE provides an excellent summary
- of the demise of one of our most important ecosystems. Useful
- for young adult and general audiences.

- STOPPING THE COMING ICE AGE 1988 * 45 min.
- ---------------------------
- Produced by Larry Ephron
-
- >Institutions: VHS Sale $75. Rent $40.
- >Individuals/Low-income groups: VHS Sale $29.95
-
- STOPPING THE COMING ICE AGE provides evidence that human
- contributions to the "greenhouse effect" may be doing more
- than warming certain regions of the earth--they may be
- accelerating the natural cycle of ice ages. This program
- dramatically illustrates how the greenhouse effect may be
- increasing temperature differences, creating more clouds,
- and transferring huge quantities of moisture to the higher
- latitudes, building up the polar glaciers. STOPPING THE
- COMING ICE AGE proposes that it may be possible to turn this
- around--by minimizing our contributions to the greenhouse
- effect, planting vast quantities of fast-growing trees, and
- remineralizing existing forests to increase their growth.
- Combines expert commentary with excellent visuals.
-
- "The actions recommended here are urgently needed to
- avoid global disaster."
