- Welcome to NetNews/CD in ISO 9660 format!
-
- Macintosh support files are provided with the first ISO 9660 issue on
- floppy disk. Please refer to the readme file on the floppy. The latest
- version of the Macintosh software will be included in the bin/mac directory
- on all future issues of NetNews/CD. In addition, there is source code for
- an NNTP server for Macintosh in src/mac/server.
-
- We have supplied a slightly modified version of trn which we have renamed
- as cdrn.exe on the CD-ROM for you to read news with. There is an executable
- for this reader in bin/sparc and bin/mips. Those are the only platforms for
- which it has been built. If you are not familiar with trn/cdrn.exe refer to
- the manual pages located in man. Both an nroff and text versions have been
- supplied. Thread files used by trn/cdrn.exe are included on the CD-ROM.
-
- Tin v1.1 PL3 is also included in the bin/sparc directory as cdtin.exe. The
- source code has been included in src/tin.
-
- We are attempting to supply readers and other support software for many
- different platforms. We are sorry that we are unable to supply readers for
- every platform. We have included the source for trn that has been modified to
- support CD-ROM news access. If you make modifications to the source in order
- to support reading from a platform that we don't supply, please send us a copy
- of your changes and we will be happy to include them for he benefit of others.
- We will be adding different readers in the future as well.

-
- The directory structure on the NetNews ISO 9660 CD is as follows:
-
- Top level directories:
-
- bin - executables
- bin/mac - Macintosh executables
- bin/mips - DEC Risc executables
- bin/sparc - Sun Sparc executables
- bin/pc - IBM PC and compatable executables
- lib - news control files (such as the active file)
- man - man page files (help files)
- spool - top level news directory, all news group directories
- go directly under this.
- src - source code directories
-
- lib - has separate control directories under it for various readers on an
- as implemented/needed basis. Currently only trn has a directory under
- lib. Directly in the lib directory are news control files such as:
-
- active - the active file for news
- active.tim - the active.times file for news
- spooldir.cf - a sample spooldir configuration file. The file
- contains comment lines which explain it's format.
- It contains information used for switching between
- multiple spool directories.
- pathtran - the news group to ISO 9660 path translation table.
- This file is an ascii file of the form, news group
- followed by spaces or tabs, and then the ISO 9660
- path for that group. Here is a sample entry:
-
- comp.org.usenix.roomshare comp/org/usenix/roomshar
-
-
- man - contains man pages both in nroff and text format.
-
- spool - contains the db.init file, now called dbi.nit to fit in ISO 9660 format,
- which is used by trn for byte swapping control on its thread files. All
- news directories are stored under this top level directory. For example,
- the group comp.org.usenix.roomshare translates via the pathtran file to
- be comp/org/usenix/roomshar. That group's directory would be located at
- spool/comp/org/usenix/roomshar. Note that the directory style will be
- different on different platforms. Under DOS for example, the '/'
- character must be replaced by '\' character.
-
- src - contains subdirectories for tools that we provide for news reading
- capabilities. Please refer to src/readme.src for specifics.
-
- We truly wish to keep on improving in order to better serve you. If you have
- any suggestions, comments, complaints or compliments, we want to hear them all.
- ==============================================================================
-
- There is a configuration file called spooldir.cf which is used by the news
- reading software to determine the location of various spool directories.
- The location of this file is in the lib directory on the CDROM. The file
- may be copied to your hard drive and modified if necessary. The cdrn.exe
- and cdtin.exe news readers can be made aware of the new location of the
- spooldir.cf file by using an XSPOOLDIR shell variable to point to the file.
- Look at lib/spooldir.cf for the sample configuration file.
