  1. Welcome to NetNews/CD in ISO 9660 format!
  2.  
  3. Macintosh support files are provided with the first ISO 9660 issue on
  4. floppy disk.  Please refer to the readme file on the floppy.  The latest 
  5. version of the Macintosh software will be included in the bin/mac directory 
  6. on all future issues of NetNews/CD.  In addition, there is source code for 
  7. an NNTP server for Macintosh in src/mac/server.
  8.  
  9. We have supplied a slightly modified version of trn which we have renamed
  10. as cdrn.exe on the CD-ROM for you to read news with.  There is an executable
  11. for this reader in bin/sparc and bin/mips.  Those are the only platforms for 
  12. which it has been built.  If you are not familiar with trn/cdrn.exe refer to
  13. the manual pages located in man. Both an nroff and text versions have been
  14. supplied.  Thread files used by trn/cdrn.exe are included on the CD-ROM.

  16. Tin v1.1 PL3 is also included in the bin/sparc directory as cdtin.exe.  The
  17. source code has been included in src/tin.

  19. We are attempting to supply readers and other support software for many 
  20. different platforms.  We are sorry that we are unable to supply readers for 
  21. every platform.  We have included the source for trn that has been modified to
  22. support CD-ROM news access.  If you make modifications to the source in order 
  23. to support reading from a platform that we don't supply, please send us a copy
  24. of your changes and we will be happy to include them for he benefit of others.

  29. The directory structure on the NetNews ISO 9660 CD is as follows:

  31. Top level directories:
  32.  
  33.     bin        - executables
  34.     bin/mac        - Macintosh executables
  35.     bin/mips    - DEC Risc executables
  36.     bin/sparc    - Sun Sparc executables
  37.     bin/pc        - IBM PC and compatable executables
  38.     lib        - news control files (such as the active file)
  39.     man        - man page files (help files)
  40.     spool        - top level news directory, all news group directories
  41.                 go directly under this.
  42.     src        - source code directories
  43.  
  44. lib - has separate control directories under it for various readers on an
  45.       as implemented/needed basis.  Currently only trn has a directory under
  46.       lib.  Directly in the lib directory are news control files such as:
  47.  
  48.     active        - the active file for news
  49.     active.tim    - the active.times file for news
  50.     spooldir.cf    - a sample spooldir configuration file.  The file
  51.               contains comment lines which explain it's format.
  52.               It contains information used for switching between
  53.               multiple spool directories.
  54.     pathtran    - the news group to ISO 9660 path translation table.
  55.               This file is an ascii file of the form, news group
  56.               followed by spaces or tabs, and then the ISO 9660
  57.               path for that group.  Here is a sample entry:

  59.     comp.org.usenix.roomshare               comp/org/usenix/roomshar
  60.

  62. man - contains man pages both in nroff and text format.
  63.  
  64. spool - contains the db.init file, now called dbi.nit to fit in ISO 9660 format,
  65.         which is used by trn for byte swapping control on its thread files.  All
  66.         news directories are stored under this top level directory. For example,
  67.         the group comp.org.usenix.roomshare translates via the pathtran file to 
  68.         be comp/org/usenix/roomshar.  That group's directory would be located at
  69.         spool/comp/org/usenix/roomshar.  Note that the directory style will be 
  70.         different on different platforms.  Under DOS for example, the '/' 
  71.         character must be replaced by '\' character.

  73. src - contains subdirectories for tools that we provide for news reading
  74.       capabilities.  Please refer to src/readme.src for specifics.

  80. There is a configuration file called spooldir.cf which is used by the news
  81. reading software to determine the location of various spool directories.
  82. The location of this file is in the lib directory on the CDROM.  The file
  83. may be copied to your hard drive and modified if necessary.  The cdrn.exe
  84. and cdtin.exe news readers can be made aware of the new location of the
  85. spooldir.cf file by using an XSPOOLDIR shell variable to point to the file.
  86. Look at lib/spooldir.cf for the sample configuration file.
