- Koop was picked because of his well known religious anti-abortion stance.

- What's interesting about his AIDS crusade is that he never wanted to have
- anything to do with it (too icky), but Reagan publicly announced--without
- any warning--that he had asked Koop to prepare a report. Koop faced it
- like a doctor, used the c-word to his own horror, and realizing that his
- report would never be acceptable to Reagan and company, went outside the
- usual channels to get the report printed. This was small atonement for
- Koop's half a decade of simply ignoring the issue.
