  20. Doppelganger!  Let that be a warning to you.  Moreover, "doppelganger" 
  21. sounds much more literary than "evil twin."

  23. That said, here is another little story to explain my reference, without 
  24. further use of the offending word.

  26. Years ago, when I was going to the U. of Chicago, occasionally some of 
  27. my friends would tell me, "Oh, I saw you last night at such-and-such."  
  28. When I protested that I was home studying (for instance) on the evening 
  29. in question, they would insist that they had seen me from a distance on 
  30. campus.  When pressed, they would sometimes concede that perhaps it was 
  31. just someone who looked identical to me.

  33. The activities I was "seen" in were invariably those I would have 
  34. considered interesting or appropriate: taking in the Doc Films showing 
  35. of "Reefer Madness" and "Bambi vs. Godzilla"; visibly stoned or giggly 
  36. at some official campus activity; appearing at a political rally; or the 
  37. like.  My physical double apparently had tastes very similar to mine.

  39. I began to seriously worry that I was suffering from fugue states or 
  40. blackouts, one day when I was walking down 57th St.* past O'Gara's and 
  41. Staver's.  A stunningly beautiful young woman walked past me, gave me a 
  42. big smile, said "Hello, Clifton", and walked on.  I was certain I had 
  43. never met her.  Since I was at that time both lonely and sexually 
  44. frustrated, in no "relationship", meeting her was not the kind of thing 
  45. which I would have readily forgotten.  I never ran into her again.

  47. I brooded about this for years.  As you can tell, I still drag it out 
  48. and brood about it occasionally.
