  13. The Big JW Honcho, Fred Franz, died on the 23rd.  Franz is
  14. responsible for the JW translation of the Bible, though he 
  15. has no formal training in Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic.  And
  16. was in fact unable to recite the Greek alphabet during the 
  17. court trial that revealed he was behind the translation.

  19. Anyway, Fred Franz was the leader of this thing called,
  20. imaginatively enough, the "Governing Body".  The Governing Body
  21. of the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society runs the Jehovah's
  22. Witnesses.  They write the _Watchtower_ articles, vet the 
  23. _Awake!_ articles written by underlings, make the big doctrinal
  24. decisions, and occasionally have big political fights with each
  25. other.  During the last big fight, Fred Franz ousted his nephew
  26. Raymond from the GB.  Raymond wrote two books all about what it's
  27. like at the top of the JWs.  Fun reading.

  29. Fred Franz is responsible for a few of the JW's more fun beliefs:
  30. refusal to accept vaccinations (since repudiated), refusal to
  31. accept blood transfusions (still in force), requirement to shun
  32. non-JW family members (still in force).  Raymond softened that
  33. last one during his tenure on the GB, because he found it cruel &
  34. inhumane.  When Fred ousted Raymond, he reinstated the shunning.

  36. Fred Franz once opened a funeral speech by yelling:  "Isn't it 
  37. grand to be ALIVE?"  He once answered a question about god
  38. killing little children in Armageddon by saying, "Little nits
  39. eventually become lice, and little rats grow up to become big
  40. rats."

  42. Quite a guy, Frederick Franz.

  44. JW doctrine & practice is quite dependent on the guy (never, ever
  45. a woman) at the top.  Watch for exciting new developments on the
  46. JW front in the next year!
