  11. He married a woman during his three-week trip to the Phillipines.  She
  12. paints porcelain doll heads for a Japanese firm, and earns a good wage
  13. because she's painted heads for ten years now.  Her name is Baby which
  14. is apparently not an uncommon women's given name there.

  16. Her English is fair, and her family is large and caring.  He could not
  17. meet the family and ask for her hand because her father was up in the
  18. hills cockfighting, in this land without telephones or bathrooms even.
  19. A day later in his precious itinerary, the meeting went well, and a
  20. cousin translated.  The cousin liked him, and helped smooth over the
  21. cultural discontinuities.

  23. He'd been divorced although Catholic, and this posed a problem
  24. unconquerable by the customary bribe.  They were married civilly then 
  25. in a Protestant church.  He was hospitalized with heatstroke shortly
  26. afterwards and understandably enough petitioned an early release.
  27. She's a beautiful woman by any standards.  They're waiting for 
  28. the visa to come through.

  31. He tells her about elk, pine forest and snow.  She'd heard about
  32. snowballs.  She asked, doesn't it hurt when you're out in the open,
  33. and the snowballs come down on you?  He told her, the snow comes down
  34. in little flakes, and they float in the air.  They melt on you, and
  35. it doesn't hurt.
