  12. Last Thursday LORRAINE and I went Christmas shopping.  We went into
  13. Salisbury's, where Lorraine spent about a quarter of an hour trying on
  14. every pair of ear-rings in the shop.  There are hundreds of ear-rings
  15. there -- long ones, wide ones, small ones, curved, straight, silver,
  16. gold plate, any kind you can imagine.  You aren't allowed to try them on
  17. because of health reasons, so she held each of them in turn up to one
  18. ear-lobe in front of a mirror while I stared at the ceiling and the
  19. floor and the walls and got bored.

  21. Eventually she settled on two pairs and she ouldn't choose between them. 
  22. Both were pretty and cheap so, desperate to get out and seeing an
  23. opportunity of escape, I said `Let's buy both, then'.  More trying-on in
  24. front of a mirror, and then she said `No, I'll just get this one'.  And
  25. she did.

  27. As soon as we were outside the shop, she said to me `You know, I really
  28. preferred the other ones.'
