- I put my wife on a plane to San Francisco on Saturday, but
- it's now sort of a moot point. She was flying down to see
- her dying aunt, Lucy, but Lucy had the ill grace to die on
- Thursday.
-
- It's too bad. She was an interesting old lady. Born into
- a dreadful body, with a severely twisted spine, one leg
- that didn't work, bad kidneys, heart problems....it's sort
- of surprising she lived to be 74, really.
-
- We'll be getting her sheet music, although she left the
- piano to someone else (it's okay; we already have one).
- Last time I visited, she asked me to play something, so
- I sat down and rattled off a few two-part inventions, but
- then she said, no, play something loud. I slogged through
- the Pathetique, and at the end she beamed at me and said,
- there, don't you feel better now? And she was right, I did.
-
- It was Christmas Day then, too, and we stopped in Chinatown
- and purchased some dim sum and ate it all spread out on
- her giant bed.
-
- She was a member of the Hemlock Society, and so there is
- some reason to believe that she took her own life. And
- why not; it was hers after all. I didn't love her, but I
- liked her, and I'm going to miss having an excuse to bop
- around in the Mission district. So long, Lucy.
