  11. I put my wife on a plane to San Francisco on Saturday, but
  12. it's now sort of a moot point. She was flying down to see
  13. her dying aunt, Lucy, but Lucy had the ill grace to die on
  14. Thursday.

  16. It's too bad. She was an interesting old lady. Born into
  17. a dreadful body, with a severely twisted spine, one leg
  18. that didn't work, bad kidneys, heart problems....it's sort
  19. of surprising she lived to be 74, really.
  20.  
  21. We'll be getting her sheet music, although she left the
  22. piano to someone else (it's okay; we already have one).
  23. Last time I visited, she asked me to play something, so 
  24. I sat down and rattled off a few two-part inventions, but
  25. then she said, no, play something loud. I slogged through
  26. the Pathetique, and at the end she beamed at me and said,
  27. there, don't you feel better now? And she was right, I did.

  29. It was Christmas Day then, too, and we stopped in Chinatown
  30. and purchased some dim sum and ate it all spread out on
  31. her giant bed.

  33. She was a member of the Hemlock Society, and so there is
  34. some reason to believe that she took her own life. And
  35. why not; it was hers after all. I didn't love her, but I
  36. liked her, and I'm going to miss having an excuse to bop
  37. around in the Mission district. So long, Lucy.
