- As an ironic point, here is the definition of "catholic" from Funk & Wagnalls
- Standard Desk Dictionary (sorry, I don't have Websters):
-
- catholic adj. 1. Broad-minded, as in belief or tastes; liberal; comprehensive;
- large. 2. Universal in reach; general.
-
- Notice that most of the aspects of 1 are about the opposite of what one might
- think of applying to the Catholic (Roman especially) Church. (ok, half of them)
- The Catholic Church (defined as The Roman Catholic Church) is generally narrow-
- minded in beliefs and conservative, when compared to other Christian Churches.
- (more restrictive than many/most Protestant Churches and "conservative" since
- they pride themselves on being based on the "ancient, undivided Christian
- church")
-
- Ironic that "catholic" means some things that are contrary to "Catholic", eh?
