- Switch on the TV. A week or two ago 9 News told about a woman who
- was denied, by the Denver Career Service Board, three days of sick leave
- to take care of her injured partner during 1990-1991. I think she was
- working for Denver General Hospital. She took them to court and on
- December 4, a Denver district judge overruled the Board's decision
- because their definition of "immediate family" ran counter to their own
- non-discrimination rule. I think they said on that broadcast that
- the city of Denver will appeal the ruling and that we're talking about
- a $200-400 dispute, here. Walter, here we have a local, recent, case
- of an organization going against it's own non-discrimination policy, and
- one clear-cut enough for a judge to agree it was discrimination. So now
- you know it happens, ok?
-
- We don't have to imagine more than one case of this to see it is unfair,
- but you can also look up articles about how the military specifically looks
- for gay people for the purpose of discharging them simply for being gay.
- You can use the index(es) for the local papers at your library to find more
- local cases. You can read the recent articles about increased anti-gay
- violence here in Colorado (I don't have dates and publications handy).
-
- As for why people discriminate, you're asking the wrong people.
- talk.religion might be a place to start. Or ask that neighbor
- who tore up his Levis. You might also ask yourself why you don't go
- to a gay bar alone, or why you don't ask around to find out where one is.
