- I find that my straight friends have a hard time understanding discrimination
- until I spell it out to them in terms of examples from my life. For example,
- I can tell them that two people in Oregon were firebombed for being gay, but
- they will say "oh, but that's so far away." However, if I point out that
- three people were shot only a block from where I live because the gunman
- thought they were gay, my friends start to get the point.

- Oddly, one of my friends (straight female) tells me that the single
- thing I said to her that gave her the most understanding of a gay person's
- plight was when I told her about the time that a little old lady in
- Boston Common spit at my boyfriend and I because we were holding hands.
