  22. Sponsorship of the federal lesbian and gay civil rights bill promises
  23. to go up as a result of the election, according to figures from the
  24. Human Rights Campaign Fund, the nation's largest gay organization.
  25. Despite losing five co-sponsors, including Rep. Bill Green (R-NY), the
  26. election brings a net gain of 14 sponsors to the landmark bill,
  27. raising the tally to 21 members of the Senate and 119 members of the
  28. House.  As currently crafted, the bill, which is expected to be
  29. introduced next year, extends the 1964 Civil Right Act covering
  30. employment and public accomodations to include sexual orientation.
