- The short, flip answer is: I didn't!
-
- Back when I started reading "net.motss", it was very near the creation
- date. Way back then, I could (and did) read the net (yes, the whole
- thing)on a daily basis, and thought it was an interesting name. Then
- I found out what "motss" stood for, and found it to be an interesting
- view into a facet of life that I had never thought about. After all,
- it seemed to be full of thoughtful messages by nice people, not the
- "nasty faggots" I was being taught to hate.
-
- August, things changed for me, and I started accepting the possibility
- that I might very well be a "motssketteer", a rather happy, non-loaded
- term that I could apply to myself without stirring up all the baggage
- that "faggot", or even "gay" carries with it. Looking back, I suppose
- I would have known at age 3, but social conditioning kept my identity
- buried. I can't imagine how more difficult this self-realization could
- have been if it wern't for soc.motss in general, and in particular, one
- Mr. Dyer, who helped set me "gaily forward", and dispelled so many
- hateful myths in our first conversation that I don't know how I could
- ever thank him.
-
- As far as motss being too cryptic, I don't really think it's too bad.
- The lesbians seem to have adopted that label ("lesbian") as their own,
- and bis have had the freedom to do similar, but I still find the term
- "gay" to be a label applied from outside. Motss started internally,
- by homosexuals, for homosexuals, about homosexuals. I guess one other
- thing is that it doesn't have "SEX" in it, because there is more to
- being gay than sex. (and no, I'm not just being crabby about celebacy,
- although... :-)
-
- I wasn't around for the great newsgroup re-naming, so I "lost"
- net.motss. I found it again by looking in the list-of-lists,
- the same way a lot of new users find such things. Maybe it's
- just me, but I feel that needing that level of "clued-in-ness"
- as an admission ticket to soc.motss is not a bad idea. Anything
- that cuts down on the level of hate traffic can't be all that
- bad.
