- Well, I don't know if you realise this, but anthropologists are trained
- to view other cultures objectively, or at least as much as possible. In
- this process, senses of superiority and disdain are reduced (although I
- don't think a feeling is ever quite eliminated, transformed perhaps,
- but not eliminated). If anything, anthropologist will be the least
- likely to treat a social or cultural convention with disdain.
-
- A cultural trait depends on it's context. For example, the Yanamamo
- celebrate births, but if there is an imbalance of females to males,
- they have no problem with infanticide on the females, and in their
- cultural context, this is more than reasonable to them. (BTW,
- since technological intrusions, this does not happen quite as often,
- although more diseases occur to kill off people.)>
-
- As for there being a reason, there is...this is only one conjecture BTW.
- When the number of women dying in childbirth, and the number of children
- dying in childbirth, it was (is) a wonder and a joy for life to be
- present at that time. Also, if you've ever been present during birth,
- it is a wonderful experience to witness (although I've never fathered nor
- given birth, so my experience is limited to watching) and deserves
- all the congrats.
