  20. I would invite you to reread the quoted lines.  Imagine it said to a 
  21. woman who is repeating her fears of being battered by her boyfriend/
  22. husband.  Imagine it said to a girl who is denigrated in class because
  23. of her sex.  Sounds cold, doesn't it?  Threatening?  Harsh?
