  31. If you haven't got ahold of 'The Language of the Night' you might
  32. want to find a copy. (LeGuin's collected essays, criticism, and
  33. novel forewords.)  It has some very interesting stuff about what
  34. she was trying to do with The Left Hand of Darkness and how well
  35. she thinks it worked, along with much other neat stuff.

  37. That particular line sat in my head when I re-read Left Hand a couple
  38. of years ago, and wouldn't go away.  (the first time I read it I was
  39. about 14, and most of it bounced.)  The end result was:

  41. Praise then Stone, and the basis of being;
  42. Praise then Earth, that rooted is life;
  43. Praise then the Wood, for the green and the growing;
  44. Praise then Water, for the ebb and flowing;
  45. Praise then Ice, that life has ending;
  46. Praise then Fire, and the impluse the making;
  47. Praise then Air, for the myriad voices;
  48. Praise then Light, and the persistence of vision;
  49. Praise then Darkness, and Creation unfinished.

  51. Just like a LeGuin novel to provide the *end* of something. :]
