- I heard of a system that worked something like this:
-
- CAT/PET scans were taken of a patient suffering from <name-your-
- favourite-tumor> and built up into a 3D model. The surgeon then dons
- the VR-ware and makes some gesture (pointing I think). As he points, a
- beam appears from his finger, representing the beam of some gamma ray
- tumor zapper.
-
- The surgeon can look in, around, under etc. the organs to the tumor,
- and plan a path for the gamma beam through the patient that will
- affect the least number of healthy organs.
-
- When she/he finds a suitable path, another gesture is performed to
- tell the computer to remember the beam's position. The surgeon can
- place as many of these beams as they deem necessary for the operation,
- with the computer storing their location. The current postion of the
- organs is tracked by the computer, so that the positions of the beams
- are updated if the patient moves. When the surgeon is ready, the gamma
- ray zappers are powered up and the tumor is fried into the middle of
- next week.
-
- The whole story went something like that. I'm not sure if it was in
- use, or planned, or just an idea someone had, but it sounded quite
- neat. Anyone know more details? maybe this could appear in
- s.v-w.apps?

- [MODERATOR'S NOTE: This is a U of North Carolina prototype. I don't
- believe it's yet been used for actual treatment, but the idea is
- definitely implementable and probably still on Henry Fuch's agenda...
