  25. WHAT?! Another newsgroup??!

  27.    Yes, yet another newsgroup to serve the ever-expanding
  28. research/information population of the global network.
  29.  
  30. The Purpose:
  31.  
  32.    To provide a forum for issues specifically surrounding the use of
  33. Virtual Worlds (Virtual Reality) Interfaces for Geographic Information
  34. Systems as well as any and all spatial information/ decision support
  35. systems. The broad goal is to generate constructive discussions about
  36. how Virtual Worlds will be used in GIS, as well as approach the
  37. fundamental issue of why implement VR at all.
  38.  
  39.    The discussion is wide open for topics such as: what steps to take,
  40. where are we now, where will it go, who might benefit, what role will
  41. conventional maps play, etc.  As with most newsgroups, the topics are
  42. wide open.  (However, let's keep the inevitable metaphysical
  43. discussions about the nature of reality to a minimum!  There are other
  44. newsgroups for that...).

  46.    In addition, it will be an open place for collaboration and the
  47. exchanging of ideas.

  49. The Membership:
  50.  
  51.    Anyone! From serious VR and GIS researchers to curious bystanders
  52. from any and all disciplines.  A multi-disciplinary approach is not
  53. only welcome, but highly encouraged.

  55. The Moderator:
  56.  
  57.    Thomas M. Edwards, a doctoral student at the University of
  58. Washington, Seattle and a cartographic consultant. Tom has written
  59. three papers on the topic, including his masters thesis, and plans to
  60. pursue it further through doctoral and personal research.
  61.  
  62.    Virtual Worlds technology has arrived and the need for improved
  63. users interfaces in GIS has been realized. How will the disciplines
  64. involved with VR and GIS shape their ultimate synthesis?  Be a part of
  65. a beginning and help shape that future.
