  27. There are at least two problems with this argument.   One is that once 
  28. the War on the Eastern Front got started, Stalin began a revival of the 
  29. Orthodox church.   Far from destroying churches, he used the patriotic
  30. fervour of Russian believers to support the war effort.

  32. This is fairly typical in history.  Tyrants compete with Churches, but
  33. use them when there is something to be gained.   You would think that
  34. after two thousand years of thgis kind of thing, the vatican could come
  35. up with something better than "lesser of two evils".   Was there some
  36. rule that they couldn't denounce the Nazi's *and* the Communists?

  38. The second problem is more serious.   The Nazis were not just the
  39. "lesser of two evils".    Their anti-semitic program was on public
  40. show early on.   The elimination of Jews from Germany was in Clause
  41. 5 of the 1920 Party program.   No-one could be in any real doubt
  42. about what the Nazis intended.

  51. Well, if anyone here was speaking out in support of the killers of
  52. christians, that would be a reasonable point, but I don't believe that
  53. anyone is.   Criticising the connection between Hitler and the
  54. Vatican doesn't make one automatically a big fan of the Kremlin.

  56. For myself, I'm just pointing out that an organization which claims
  57. to have a lot of moral authority, actually has a history of compromise
  58. with a great many tyrants.
