  25. QSPIRES is available as QSPIRES@VM.SLAC.STANFORD.EDU .  You cannot
  26. remote login; it is a server.  You can send it mail.  The subject
  27. line must be blank, and the body must contain exactly one line - the
  28. the command you want processed.  For example, to find out where an
  29. institution is, use the command WHEREIS FERMILAB.  (These instructions
  30. are inside the back cover of the "Particle Data Book".)

  37. With the QSPIRES  command you can perform  a database search
  38. in the SLAC HEP (High Energy Physics Preprints)  database or
  39. a variety of  other database files with  information such as
  40. names,  phones  and computer  account information  of people
  41. associated  with  SLAC.    Information   requested  will  be
  42. displayed on the terminal or may be returned via reader file
  43. if desired.

  45. Database  searches  may  also  be made  from  any  SLAC  (or
  46. authorized) bitnet node, see notes below.

  78. HELP           displays general help.    If optional SUBFILE
  79.                is requested then a  list of available SPIRES
  80.                database subfiles will be given.

  82. EXPLAIN        displays  a short  description  of the  given
  83.                subfile.  Where "subfile-name" is the same of
  84.                an available subfile.   Subfile  names can be
  85.                displayed using the HELP SUBFILES command.

  87. DISPLAY        displays  a single  record  from the  default
  88.                subfile,  or a alternate subfile specified in
  89.                "options".   Where  "record-key" is key  of a
  90.                single record in the subfile.

  92. BROWSE         will return a random sampling of index values
  93.                within the specified index term.   If "First"
  94.                or "Last is  given then the sampling  will be
  95.                sequential beginning at the  top or bottom of
  96.                the  tree.   If  a "value"  is  given then  a
  97.                sampling  of values  in the  general area  of
  98.                that value will be  presented.   Browse could
  99.                be used to identify the  type of index values
  100.                expected in a search request.

  102. WHOIS          displays information about  the given persons
  103.                name either  from the local  BINLIST database
  104.                or from the BITNAMES  subfile.   Where "name"
  105.                is a  persons name and  "node" is  the BITNET
  106.                node address.

  108. QUERY          displays  information  about  the  electronic
  109.                mail address of a given person.  Where "name"
  110.                is a persons name. The search is  carried out
  111.                for all nodes.

  113. WHEREIS        displays information about the location given
  114.                from the local INSTITUTIONS database.   Where
  115.                "location" is  the address  or location  your
  116.                looking for such a "FERMILAB" or "CERN".
  117.  
  118. SHOW           to display local spires information about the
  119.                subfile  or  environment.     Used  to  issue
  120.                commands such as SHOW SUBFILE SIZE.
  121. FIND           performs a  search on using  the "index-term"
  122.                if given.   If "index-term" is not given then
  123.                a  default will  be  used.    i.e.   for  the
  124.                BINLIST database  the term NAME  is searched,
  125.                if no records are found  then the search term
  126.                VM is used.

  130. FILE           request data to be returned in a reader file.

  132. TYPE           data is returned via CP TELL commands.

  134. RESULT         only reports  the results of the  search,  no
  135.                actual record data is returned.

  139. BRIEF          displays the records in a brief form.

  141. NOSTAR         records are stacked without  a "* " beginning

  144. USING <frame>  request an  alternate SPIRES format  frame to

  147. IN <subfile>   specifies a specific subfile  to be searched.

  150. STACK          stacks returned info FIFO.

  152. LIFO           stacks returned info LIFO.

  155.                option.

  160. the QSPIRES HELP  SUBFILES command.   The list  of available

  176. To find more  information about a specific  subfile name try
  177. the EXPLAIN, SHOW INDEX and BROWSE commands, i.e.

  183. Note that if  you are dealing with a subfile  other than the
  184. default  (HEP),  then  you must  indicate so  using the  "IN
  185. <subfile>" option.

  187. Access to any of the  available subfiles may be accomplished
  188. via any SLAC/BITNET node.   In this case,  the default is to
  189. send the  resultant records via  punch file however  you may
  190. override this with the TYPE options.  Send the equivalent of
  191. a CP  TELL command  to the  disconnected machine  QSPIRES at
  192. SLACVM rather than issuing the QSPIRES command.  I.e.
