-
- QSPIRES is available as QSPIRES@VM.SLAC.STANFORD.EDU . You cannot
- remote login; it is a server. You can send it mail. The subject
- line must be blank, and the body must contain exactly one line - the
- the command you want processed. For example, to find out where an
- institution is, use the command WHEREIS FERMILAB. (These instructions
- are inside the back cover of the "Particle Data Book".)
-
- I have enclosed the QSPIRES help file:
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- QSPIRES
-
- With the QSPIRES command you can perform a database search
- in the SLAC HEP (High Energy Physics Preprints) database or
- a variety of other database files with information such as
- names, phones and computer account information of people
- associated with SLAC. Information requested will be
- displayed on the terminal or may be returned via reader file
- if desired.
-
- Database searches may also be made from any SLAC (or
- authorized) bitnet node, see notes below.

- PARM:
-
- HELP displays general help. If optional SUBFILE
- is requested then a list of available SPIRES
- database subfiles will be given.
-
- EXPLAIN displays a short description of the given
- subfile. Where "subfile-name" is the same of
- an available subfile. Subfile names can be
- displayed using the HELP SUBFILES command.
-
- DISPLAY displays a single record from the default
- subfile, or a alternate subfile specified in
- "options". Where "record-key" is key of a
- single record in the subfile.
-
- BROWSE will return a random sampling of index values
- within the specified index term. If "First"
- or "Last is given then the sampling will be
- sequential beginning at the top or bottom of
- the tree. If a "value" is given then a
- sampling of values in the general area of
- that value will be presented. Browse could
- be used to identify the type of index values
- expected in a search request.
-
- WHOIS displays information about the given persons
- name either from the local BINLIST database
- or from the BITNAMES subfile. Where "name"
- is a persons name and "node" is the BITNET
- node address.
-
- QUERY displays information about the electronic
- mail address of a given person. Where "name"
- is a persons name. The search is carried out
- for all nodes.
-
- WHEREIS displays information about the location given
- from the local INSTITUTIONS database. Where
- "location" is the address or location your
- looking for such a "FERMILAB" or "CERN".
-
- SHOW to display local spires information about the
- subfile or environment. Used to issue
- commands such as SHOW SUBFILE SIZE.
- FIND performs a search on using the "index-term"
- if given. If "index-term" is not given then
- a default will be used. i.e. for the
- BINLIST database the term NAME is searched,
- if no records are found then the search term
- VM is used.
-
- OPTIONS:
-
- FILE request data to be returned in a reader file.
-
- TYPE data is returned via CP TELL commands.
-
- RESULT only reports the results of the search, no
- actual record data is returned.
-
- INFO Same as RESULT.
-
- BRIEF displays the records in a brief form.
-
- NOSTAR records are stacked without a "* " beginning
- each line.
-
- USING <frame> request an alternate SPIRES format frame to
- use for display.
-
- IN <subfile> specifies a specific subfile to be searched.
- (default is HEP).
-
- STACK stacks returned info FIFO.
-
- LIFO stacks returned info LIFO.
-
- FIFO stacks returned info FIFO, same as STACK
- option.
-
- NOTES:
-
- To display a list of the currently available subfiles, issue
- the QSPIRES HELP SUBFILES command. The list of available
- subfiles are:
-
- BINLIST The SLAC People directory.
- HEP The High Energy Physics Preprints Database
- INST Current addresses for affiliations used
- HEP subfile
- BOOKS On-line book catalog for the SLAC library
- CONF Information about past & future
- conferences
- SEMINARS SLAC compendium of bay area seminars &
- colloquiums
- PROBTRAK SCS Problem tracking and reporting
- BOOKS-VENDORS
- BITNAMES
-
- To find more information about a specific subfile name try
- the EXPLAIN, SHOW INDEX and BROWSE commands, i.e.
-
- QSPIRES EXPLAIN HEP
- QSPIRES SHOW INDEX (IN SEMINARS
- QSPIRES BROWSE NAME
-
- Note that if you are dealing with a subfile other than the
- default (HEP), then you must indicate so using the "IN
- <subfile>" option.
-
- Access to any of the available subfiles may be accomplished
- via any SLAC/BITNET node. In this case, the default is to
- send the resultant records via punch file however you may
- override this with the TYPE options. Send the equivalent of
- a CP TELL command to the disconnected machine QSPIRES at
- SLACVM rather than issuing the QSPIRES command. I.e.
-
- TELL QSPIRES AT SLACVM FIND AUTHOR CRANE
- TELL QSPIRES AT SLACVM QUERY JOHNSON
- TELL QSPIRES AT SLACVM QUERY JOHNSON, R
- TELL QSPIRES AT SLACVM SHOW INDEX (TYPE
- TELL QSPIRES AT SLACVM HELP SUBFILES
- TELL QSPIRES AT SLACVM EXPLAIN HEP
