- JC>I don't think the MEUs are deploying with a tank platoon anymore. In
- JC>there place the MEUs are attaching a reinforced Light Armored Infantry
- JC>platoon. I'm not sure of the LAI platoon's exact composition.

- Howdy..sorry to butt in, but...

- I was watching one of the press conferences on CNN the other day, and some
- sharpeyed journalist mentioned that he'd seen M1A1 tanks being offloaded
- in Mogadashu (sp?) harbour. The Marine general confirmed that they were
- in fact M1A1s, but he said that at present there were no plans to use them
- in the operation; rather, since the ship being offloaded was one of the
- prepositioned supply ships based at Diego Garcia, the tanks were on board
- as part of standard equipment, and had to be offloaded so other equipment
- in the holds needed for the operation could be reached. Apparently, at
- present time the tanks are onboard a ship in the harbour, available with a
- few hours notice.
