- A dear friend of mine who was addicted to both alcohol & heroin in the late
- 60's (now sober 23 years) has repeatedly said that quitting smoking (which she
- has not yet acheived) is much harder than getting off either heroin or alcohol.
-
- I smoked for 15 years before I quit for good (I think it was my 6th or 7th
- attempt). I quit by going on a 3-week wilderness backpacking trip in the Rocky
- mountains w/out taking any cigarettes with me. It would have been a
- several-days' hike out of the mountains to find a cigarette machine, a strong
- incentive to make due w/out the damn things. Also, by the time I returned from
- that trip I felt so fit & healthy from all that high altitude hiking that I
- didn't want to pollute myself with another cigarette. It worked for me.
