- I have a friend that is a diabetic from a young age that is also a long distance bike rider.
- This friend competes in and wins many such local events. He is now interested in the
- Race Across America (RAMM) and raced in it last summer (and will be doing it again in
- '94). I am his crew chief and want to be helpful in any way that I can. In all events that
- I have crewed for him, the crew had to check his blood suger every 2 hours and give him
- insulin or food, depending on his blood suger level. In the RAMM, which last 8-10 days,
- this gets to be a real problem, because he has to stop to draw blood. This stopping
- is very disruptive when he's tired because don't want to get back on his bike. We have considered
- a method or two to draw blood with a shorter stop or no stopping at all, but every thing we have
- thought of is to risky when he is riding (which might cause him to fall).
- So, as a result of all of this I have several questions. First, what causes diabetes?
- How does taking insulin controll his blood suger level (yea, I don't know much about this
- but I learn quickly). He currently takes two types of insulin; a short acting and a long acting
- type. What are the types and would taking one in greater proporstion then the other be better?
- Is their a method of getting a blood suger test without stopping him and be very safe for
- a very tired cyclist? If I have to stop him to take blood samples, is their a way to make the
- time between tests longer? Here, I have in mind is making predictions based on his eating, cycling,
- and what ever else might be important. I have many powerful experimental methods available
- to be me and a degree of time before the event to do the experiments. Is their any other questions that I
- should be asking? and what are the AWS?
-
- Thanks in advance
