  14. A friend of mine has been diagnosed to have an herniated
  15. disk in the lumbar region. A back surgery is one option
  16. that has been suggested. I would appreciate if you can 
  17. help us in making an informed decision by providing
  18. information about any of the following:

  20. 1. detailed information about the herniated disk condition, 
  21. 2. current surgical and non-surgical methods of treatment,
  22.    and their effectiveness,
  23. 3. issues to think about in choosing between surgery and
  24.    non-surgery,
  25. 4. issues of concern (risks etc) in the surgical procedure 
  26.    itself,
  27. 5. post-surgery convalescence: time spent in hospital, time
  28.    immobile, time displaced from work etc.

  30. References to literature, and personal experiences are most
