  21. I agree completely.  But the whole point I'm making is NOT that benzos
  22. or anxiolytics in general are problematic, but that among benzos, there
  23. is something very specifically different about Xanax.

  25. The special scorn heaped upon Xanax doesn't relate to the frequency with
  26. which it is a problem, it's to do with the severity and lengthiness of
  27. the withdrawal associated with it.

  29. The net.testimonies (not enough for a study of course, even if the data
  30. had been gathered scientifically) also seem to have a common component
  31. that seems funny to me: the patient successfully reduces his dosage
  32. slowly over time, down to Almost nothing (250mics, isn't it?).  So far
  33. so good.  But then when the dose goes from that to 0 all hell breaks
  34. loose.  It's as tho in addition to whatever dose-related (perhaps linear)
  35. effect the drug has, it has an additional effect that kicks in with even
  36. the smallest dose -- such that withdrawal from that additional effect
  37. only kicks in with the very last step in tapering.

  39. I've never actually met anyone personally who withdrew from Xanax so the
  40. above is sheer speculation based, as I said, on net.testimonies.

  42. There are an awful lot of areas in which I think MDs are much wiser than
  43. 12-step folks (and of course the two groups do overlap to some extent) but
  44. I really think that for this particular question, it's the 12-step folks
  45. who are the most knowledgable experts.
