  13. In these statistics, it is also important to distinguish income
  14. from pay.  In any profession with highly paid members, their
  15. average income will be quite a bit above their average pay
  16. because many are able to save and invest a significant portion of
  17. their *pay* early in their life and enjoy *income* from this
  18. investment later in their life.  Thus, many physicians,
  19. engineers, and lawyers who are over fifty have incomes that are
  20. significantly greater (sometimes many times greater) than the
  21. salary they command.
