  13. You know, I think one of the problems here is that many of the
  14. compiler designers and other laymen just have no experience with
  15. psychotics.  They think we are talking about people who are
  16. eccentric or socially deviant.  It would do them a world of
  17. good to take a field trip to a mental ward and talk to some
  18. of these people.  People who eat their own feces, who think
  19. they are being controlled by wires implanted into their heads
  20. by aliens, who think their baby's head has been put on backwards
  21. and are trying to turn it around.  People who cut themselves
  22. with razor blades.  I'd recommend a visit 
  23. especially to an acute ward, so a couple of months
  24. later, after these people have been treated they can return and
  25. see the difference the treatment has made.  Because psychotic
  26. patients are not something you encounter every day at the typical
  27. software firm, I think such people don't have the faintest idea
  28. about how sick and crazy these diseases can make a person, and 
  29. neither how much better they get with treatment.

  31. Kurt Vonnegut's son, Mark, wrote an interesting book about
  32. his psychotic break which does give a flavor of what being
  33. psychotic is like.  I forgot the title.
