- You know, I think one of the problems here is that many of the
- compiler designers and other laymen just have no experience with
- psychotics. They think we are talking about people who are
- eccentric or socially deviant. It would do them a world of
- good to take a field trip to a mental ward and talk to some
- of these people. People who eat their own feces, who think
- they are being controlled by wires implanted into their heads
- by aliens, who think their baby's head has been put on backwards
- and are trying to turn it around. People who cut themselves
- with razor blades. I'd recommend a visit
- especially to an acute ward, so a couple of months
- later, after these people have been treated they can return and
- see the difference the treatment has made. Because psychotic
- patients are not something you encounter every day at the typical
- software firm, I think such people don't have the faintest idea
- about how sick and crazy these diseases can make a person, and
- neither how much better they get with treatment.
-
- Kurt Vonnegut's son, Mark, wrote an interesting book about
- his psychotic break which does give a flavor of what being
- psychotic is like. I forgot the title.
