  23. I don't think that level of education is the issue beyond the following:
  24. an MD is usually (but not always) a postgrad degree because of the need
  25. for a number of college level courses in biology, chemistry, etc
  26. before med school. Furthermore, after graduation there is Internship
  27. and usually residency, so a typical MD has as many years invested in
  28. education as any PHD.

  30. HOWEVER, MD's often make big bucks for two reasons:
  31.   >Supplies limited due to difficulty of getting the education 
  32.   >Fee for service

  34. I would point out that the same applies to lawyers and lots of other
  35. professionals doing personal service work.

  37. What should they make IMHO? I think that given the long hours and
  38. heavy responsibilities on many physicians, coupled with the significant
  39. education, they should make a pretty high salary (experienced 747 captains
  40. make ~$150,000 last time I checked!). Currently there seem to be large
  41. distortions (some specialties making big money without having to
  42. do hospital visits or taking midnight calls from patients - such as
  43. Radiologists - while primary care folks are making much less). Reforms
  44. in the health care system are likely to fix this over time. It's clear
  45. to me that the guy who does nothing all day but Radial Keratotomy
  46. and earns millions per year is getting overpaid, and using only a tiny
  47. fraction of his education!
