  20. The Government Purchasing Project was founded by consumer
  21. advocate Ralph Nader to encourage the U.S. government to use its
  22. power as a consumer to bring environmentally responsible products
  23. into the marketplace.  The project has concentrated on three
  24. areas: solid waste reduction, energy efficiency and pollution
  25. prevention.  As part of its energy efficiency work, the GPP
  26. publishes "Energy Ideas," a monthly newsletter which describes
  27. how public agencies (schools, city halls, police stations and
  28. other facilities) can save money and prevent pollution by
  29. installing energy efficient and renewable energy technologies. 
  30. The newsletter has also been posted on EcoNet (see the
  31. <climate.news> conference).

  33. Though the first six issues have concentrated on the available
  34. technologies, I want to focus an issue on the efforts of other
  35. governments to use energy efficient and renewable energy
  36. technologies.  The focus of this issue is not on how the
  37. government can encourage the residential or commercial sectors to
  38. use these technologies, but on how government itself uses these
  39. technologies in its own facilities.  If anyone has information on
  40. such efforts in countries outside of the United States, I would
  41. like to learn more.
