- Ok, here is just the thing for you surplus fanatics (assuming you've
- got LOTS of extra room). I just found out that the civil
- engineering department here has placed into property surplus
- a Kelsh plotter. This is the device which was (is?) used to
- draw contour maps such as you can buy from the USGS. I took
- a course in surveying about 10 years ago and used one of these
- machines. Basically they consist of two large projectors

- Ok, here is just the thing for you 3d fanatics (assuming you've

- draw contour maps such as you can buy from the USGS. I took
- a course in surveying about 10 years ago and used one of these
- machines. Basically they consist of two large projectors
- which shine two images down on a massive (to damp out vibrations)
- table. They are either polarized or have an alternate shutter
- mechanism. There are two photos taken from an airplane looking
- at the ground (spaced some distance apart). Thus you get a
- strong hyperstereo effect. You then could move around a
- stylus on the table top, and to draw the contours you moved the
- stylus around, while looking at the stereo image and attempting to
- keep the stylus at the same "height" in the projection.
-
- This is truly a massive piece of equipment, but I suspect it
- will go out to be sold publicly and will probably only bring
- a small amount of money (since nobody knows what it is).
-
- Probably you'd need to be close enough to Flagstaff to come
- in a truck and move it yourself if you were to successfully
- bid on it. I'd expect it to come up for auction in 6 weeks or
- so.
-
- If you think you might have a use for it, drop me a line and
- I'll provide more details...
