- Most likely, it was a Hall-effect device used to sense end-of-tape. When you
- reach an end-of-tape situation (in play, rewind, or Fast-forward), the hub is
- stopped by the tape-tension, the magnet no longer passes by the device, and
- the periodic signal ceases to be induced.

- This signal is also used for the digital tape-counter (if your deck has one).
- Some decks use an optical device and a wheel with reflective patterns.
