  14. A rheostat will get mighty warm dimming a light.  Not a smart way to go.
  15. If you want to follow that sort of a path, I would try a varyable voltage
  16. transformer.  At least that will be a bit efficent.  You may also want to 
  17. try converting the output of your lamp dimmer to DC (with 4 diodes) and
  18. adding a filter so the higher frequency noise going to the lamp is smootheed
  19. out.
