- The best method to measure current is to insert an RMS reading current
- meter into the AC line. One meter maker (Fluke, I think) makes an AC adaptor
- thingy to reduce the risk of electricution. You can make your own out of an
- extention cord.
-
- You may calculate the power usage by making some guesses at the efficiency
- of your equipment and noting the hours per day it's on.
-
- A much simpler way is to ask your local utility company to loan you
- a kilowatt-hour meter for a week.
-
- The local PG&E office here in Grass Valley (9,000 souls!) has four
- units available in boxes which have a line cord and an outlet. You simply
- plug in everything you want to measure and note the reading. Do it
- again some time later (10 hours, 24 hours, 100 hours etc) and subtract
- the old reading. Multiply that by the rate on your utility bill (ours is
- $0.111/kWhr) and you'll have a answer.
-
- Call you utility office. Be patient and persistent. To work for a
- utility, answering the phones, one does not have to know about kWhr
- meters :*) :*)
