- The following information concerning predictions for occultations by
- Toutatis was received from David Dunam, International Occultation
- Timing Association. David doesn't have usenet access, but can be

- On Dec. 23, one path passes north of Los Angeles and south of San
- Francisco. On Dec. 26, one crosses southern Alberta and the northern Rocky
- Mountain states. On Dec. 31, one passes over the Boston area, near Ottawa,
- and north of Winnipeg. Details are below.

- MORE UPDATED PREDICTIONS FOR OCCULTATIONS BY TOUTATIS - Yeomans-D Ephem.

- The paths for occultations by Toutatis during late December are
- shown in the maps in the November issue of Occultation Newsletter.
- Detailed path predictions are given at the end of this message. Bracketing
- these paths with observers could provide a high-accuracy astrometric fix on
- Toutatis that would complement radar data to improve the orbit.
- For each occultation, header lines only identify the star, date,
- and time of geocentric closest approach. The first table gives
- conditions for the event, the second is a table interpolated at integral
- degrees of longitude, and that is followed by a list of the coordinates
- of time points at one-minute intervals. Angles are in degrees unless
- otherwise stated.
- The "YeomansD" ephemeris used to calculate the updated predictions
- is based on radar ranging to Toutatis from Nov. 27 to Dec. 11, and on
- optical data from 1934 to 1992 Dec. 11. On Dec. 23, it is running about
- 0.1" north and with 0.0 minute time correction from the YeomansA ephemeris
- on which the the Occultation Newsletter tables and maps are based; by Dec.
- 31, the difference is 0.2" north with again zero time correction. This
- means that the paths are very close to the center of the paths shown in
- Occultation Newsletter.
- The radar data show that Toutatis' diameter is 2 km, not 3.5 km. The
- YeomansD orbit continues to satisfy the radar observations very accurately,
- so there is no need to update it, according to Yeomans. Star position
- error is now dominant now that Toutatis is rushing away from the Earth.

- The distances are the half-width of the path uncertainty range. The source
- catalog codes are given under "S" in the 2nd table on p. 235 of the Nov.
- issue of Occultation Newsletter; C = Astrographic Catalog, etc. I think
- that occultation observations would be valuable astrometrically to refine
- the orbit more, complementing the radar data that gives precise distance
- but not so good accuracy in the sky plane. Ideally, enough observers
- should bracket the path to ensure that two or more of them see an
- occultation (that is, 1.5 km or smaller separation), since such short
- events could also be caused by birds. But this will be difficult near the
- end of the month as the star position uncertainty path widths increase.
- It seems not effective to continue to try to play this game in 1993.
