- For my next telescope project, I was thinking I would try something a bit
- more challenging than the traditional Newtonian telescope, so I have been
- considering fabricating an obstruction-free telescope for planetary/lunar
- work. Of these, the Yolo design appears to be the most practical for
- fabrication by amateurs. But, since I haven't fabricated such a beastie
- before, I am seeking information from a mentor....

- I have read several articles about Yolo design that have appeared in
- Telescope Making, and can work through most of that mathematics. I have
- used them to reproduce the dimensions for a couple of yolo designs that I
- have seen, but the equations presented by Sasian in issue #37 don't show how
- good the resulting system is. I have toyed with the idea of doing some
- simple raytracing to plot the off axis performance, but would be glad if
- someone else knows of some (cheap) software that could this.

- Another thing I am concerned with is the fabrication of the long radius
- mirrors. The depth of the curves are VERY small, and it seems like it would
- be difficult to maintain them within the 6" tolerance needed. I realize
- that once the mirrors are fabricated, the system could be optimized, but if
- anyone has any hints on grinding very long radius mirrors, I would be
- appreciative.
