- If you want stats from among Anthropologists, my wife during her two
- pregnancies refused point blank to have anything to do with Western
- male doctors, and it was only during the final stages of delivery that
- they intervened at all (she didn't care at that point anyway).
-
- But during the course of pregnancy, she relied heavily on traditional
- herbal preparations in frequent consultation by phone with some of the
- old women from her home village in China. Today also we both consult
- the Chinese herbalist brought here by the Chinese community from the
- Medical School at the University of Beijing, rather than bother any
- more with the local GP (male or female).
-
- The herb garden decorating the front of our house supplies all the
- routine remedies of childhood, while I personally also use traditional
- Aboriginal methods when I am out in the bush rather than carry a heavy
- first-aid kit with me all the time just to treat the odd inconvenience.
-
- Law suits are simply not an issue because we both finally gave up on
- the somewhat patronising and disempowering Western medical practice for
- the vast bulk of our family's health care needs. We tend not to like
- "specialties" in medicine, but take a more holistic view of preventive
- health care and good family management. Both our boys are thriving,
- energetic and big for their age (but they also get *heaps* of really
- geniune TLC alongside occasional smacked bottoms), while any surgery
- we might need at any time remains to be seen.
-
- Sorry for being verbose and off the thread. This is one of my favourite
- topics :-)
