  12. I have seen two cases where a Sony set emitted the annoying high-pitched
  13. whine which apparently was caused by the picture tube vibrating against the
  14. plastic bezel.

  16. The whine is at the horizontal sweep frequency, over 15 kHz, so many people 
  17. can't hear it.  but those who do generally find it quite annoying.

  19. In the sets I saw, it seemed that the front surface of the picture tube was
  20. vibrating against the plastic, right at the edge of the viewing area.  By 
  21. stuffing a tiny rectangle of paper between the CRT face and the bezel at the
  22. top of the screen, I was able to completely eliminate the sound.

  24. There are many other possible sources of this same frequency vibration, but
  25. this worked for me in 2 cases so you might try it.  Press against the plastic 
  26. bezel with your fingers in various locations while the noise is occurring, and
  27. see if you can cause it to stop.
