- Regarding outboard pro-logic decoders:
-
- In my experience, the Shure HTS-5300 has sounded significantly better than
- some of the more-expensive units (The Shure is around $700 where as most
- of the decent other brands start at $900). The Shure, however, has NO built
- in amps. This is kind of a bummer for me because to power the rears you
- need a Stereo amp (The Shure does something to the mono rear channel to
- spread it out a bit, thus you need to use a stereo amp to power the rear
- speakers) and to power the fronts (of course) you need a stereo amp, which
- means for the center and subwoofer (The Shure has a subwoofer output which
- works really well) you need ANOTHER stereo amp. (A channel for the center and
- a channel for the sub)
-
- I can't AFFORD another Amp these days. The center channel has to be of equal
- quality to the fronts, and to do that I'd have to fork out another $400 for
- a decent Amp! So right now, I matrix the front channels and go without a
- subwoofer, and I still think it sounds better than the Yamaha (IMHO).
-
- It also has pretty lights on the front (hehehe).
