  18. As a technology, no.  As a pre-recorded title medium, yes.

  20. S-VHS is essentially the only game in town for people (like me), who can't
  21. stand VHS image quality and want a way to perform time-shifting with
  22. tolerable results.  S-VHS "EP" is even superior to VHS "SP".  If you do a
  23. lot of 6-hour recording, S-VHS is the way to go.  Of course, the deck will
  24. also record and play regular VHS (yuk) when the need arises.

  26. For home video media, most people start with VHS.  If they are dissatisfied
  27. (and clearly many aren't), the next upgrade is LD.  LD is superior to S-VHS,
  28. so the only reason to then further add/upgrade-to S-VHS is for improved
  29. off-air recording.  It's not surprising that it's a small market.

  33. As far as I know, nobody rents S-VHS.  The only source for pre-recorded
  34. S-VHS titles is some mailer-order place called "Super Source", but their
  35. catalog is limited.  LDs provide better quality, and on average are probably
  36. cheaper than 'Source's S-VHS tapes, so no S-VHS market is likely to develop.
