- : I'm off to Egypt next March for a short holiday en-route to
- : Europe. I would appreciate some useful advice and tips about
- : Cairo and Egypt in general - such as the best places to cash
- : travellers' cheques; what to avoid (besides the water); and
- : any interesting things to do or see apart from the usual
- : tourist traps.
-
-
- Egypt is work. I'll share a few hints from my recent trip.
-
- You will be required to change money at the airport. Change the *least*
- that they will let you. EVERYWHERE ELSE is a better deal. Best deal is
- on the street, black market money changers are on every corner. Just
- don't carry everything in your wallet.
-
- You'll learn about Baksheesh very quickly. Something between a tip and
- a handout. Everyone expects one for the slightest service or
- information. If you ride a camel, both the camel and the driver will
- want baksheesh.
-
- If you can, go with a tour to the Pyramids. Cab fares are double or
- triple for tourists *returning to Cairo* from the pyramids.
-
- Cabs: Meters in cabs don't work. There seems to be 4 rate schedules:
-
- 1. For tourists that don't know better
- 2. For tourists that want a cab at a nice hotel
- 3. for tourists that do know better
- 4. For the locals.
-
- Rates that would cost a local resident $1-2 dollars cost tourists
- $10-15. The deal seems to be that you must already know how much to
- spend on a given fare before getting into the cabs. If you ask or
- expect the meter to work you'll be in class 1 or 2. Locals hail a cab,
- give a destination, then pay some sort of unspoken fare. As a tourist,
- you'll never get that rate, the best you can do is make the deal before
- you get in. You'll get gouged, but at least you'll know it in advance.
- If you can, travel with a local. If possible, do not take a cab from a
- hotel, flag one down a block away. Expect to pay 3-4x for a ride from
- a hotel. Buses are dirt cheap if you can figure out which ones to take.
-
- At the pyramids: If you arrive on your own at Giza, the only benefit
- from hiring a tour guide is that he will keep the rest of them at bay.
- An unescorted tourist is fair game and you will be hounded continuously.
- They don't know any more than a good guide book can tell you.
-
- Wear dark glasses. Making eye contact with anyone seems to open
- yourself up for offers of money changing, sex, guide service and
- invariably, baksheesh.
-
- Cairo is a wonderful city, its sights and treats are really worth the
- visit, The Cairo Museum alone is worth the trip. However you must
- really be on your toes.
-
-
- Good luck!
