- My wife and I will be making a trip to visit her parents
- in Taiwan over Chinese New Year. Our flight returns via Narita, and
- Daphne has a cousin that is a student in Kobe. When we called her
- aunt and uncle to find out how expensive it would be to visit, they
- replied "Don't worry about the money" [Don't you wish you had
- relatives like that -- Daphne's parents are sending us to Hong Kong
- for clothes shopping before the Chinese New Year. Sorry, can't resist
- gloating -- us poor grad students don't get much travel fun]
-
- Anyway, we'll arrive in Narita mid afternoon on 5 Feb, and
- leave late evening on 9 Feb. My questions are:
-
- 1) How long does customs take? My wife is on a Taiwan passport,
- I am an American.
-
- 2) How are luggage storage facilities in Narita? Since we'll
- have the stuff from our Hong Kong trip, plus whatever junk her mother
- gives her, I figure that we'll have a lot of luggage that would be a
- pain to carry around for the few days that we're there.
-
- 3) How about the train from Narita to Tokyo? I saw a newspaper
- article recently stating that the train was often sold out far in
- advance. We'll be getting a Japan rail pass while in Taiwan (courtesy
- of aunt and uncle). Should we attempt train reservations then? -
- which is why we need an estimate of how long customs takes.
-
- Since I don't know how long it will take to get to the downtown
- Tokyo train station ( I hear a long time), we'll probably spend the
- first night in Tokyo near the train station (again, courtesy of aunt
- and uncle :) ). Any comments, questions, suggestions.
- Since we'll be getting the Japan rail pass, I figure that we'll go
- to Kyoto, especially since I've heard that Kobe isn't too interesting
- a place. Since I really like architecture and temples, I've been told
- Kyoto is the place to go.
-
- Thanks in advance for any feedback that I receive.
