- 10:00 AM Wednesday morning:
-
- So,here we are at Squaw Valley in the midst of the
- worst (or is it best) snowstorm in 10 years. So
- much snow has fallen that they are beginning to
- stop talking about the "blizzard of '83," which I
- also experienced, and it was nothing like this!
- When Reno airport gets 1.5 feet of snow and the
- big question is "how many inches per hour," you
- know you're gonna see some serious feet.
-
- Up until today (Wednesday), most of the mountain
- was closed due to winds. Two days ago, we skied
- big red and squaw creek. They were pretty well
- protected and there were more ways down the hill
- than I ever thought existed, and that was about
- thirty inches ago.
-
- Today is an alleged calm between two storms, but
- from the condo window (just behind and to the
- right of granite chief ski shop) I canstill see a
- constant flurry (wind, perhaps?). We are led to
- expect another big dump tonight and tomorrow. Of
- course, there's almost no one at all on the
- mountain, but since most everything is closed,
- there are still some short lines.
-
- Most of the kids just escaped through this narrow
- window in order to make their new year's parties
- in the Bay Area, but we're here till Sunday.
-
- Gotta go take a powder now.
-
- 6:00 PM Wednesday:
-
- Great stuff. Skied snow king and big red only to
- learn later on that the mountain run was open.
- Snow flurries most of the day, patches of blue
- here and there, and a view of the lake for a
- while. Big, black clouds hanging in the west, not
- moving, promising what we undeerstand could be
- another four feet (though, to be honest, there's a
- different forecast for everybody you ask and for
- every number you call, and for every radio station
- you listen to).
-
- Spoke to a guy who lives in Tahoma who says that
- the lake will come up two feet. A lot of
- buisinesses saved. Been waiting for this for eight
- years. We hear that five feet has fallen in the
- past 48 hours.
-
- I'll post this and try to answer questions, if
- any, but phone service is dicey and expensive.
-
- Later.
