- Down here in San Diego, there is a sale on at Sportsmart for
- Rollerblade Lightnings 608 for $100 (normally they go for $160),
- which is very close to cost. These are lace up half way with a
- buckle at the cuff. They come with very good ABEC1 (grade A) bearings
- and Kryptonics 608 70 mm 82A wheels. Everybody I know loves these
- skates for roller hockey and they seem to be very durable. I have
- been playing roller hockey on these for 6 months now and highly
- recommend them.
-
- My girlfriend bought some cheaper Roller Derby skates for
- around $60. The bearings in them were just awful. We replaced
- the bearings with equivalent Lightning bearings for ($1.50 x 16)
- $24 dollars and her skates run much smoother. She does not
- play roller hockey, so for her, the wheels are not all that
- important. But my guess is that her wheels wouldn't last too
- long if she played hockey. To get the equilvalent Lightning
- wheels would run $5.00 a wheel. If you bought the cheaper skates,
- once you got the hang of skating, you would probably want to
- upgrade your bearings and wheels. Just to get the Lightning
- bearing/wheel combination would run $64 dollars. That is why
- $100 for the whole Lightning package is such a deal, since
- the Lightning boot and frame (I think) would be much better than
- what you would get in the cheaper models.
