- Not that it really matters, but.... :^)
-
- Well over 50% of the men in ice shows are gay - at least from
- my experience as a straight male skater in both the "Ice Capades",
- and "Celebration on Ice" (I was outnumbered 7-1 in "Celebration").
-
- The reason for this is fairly obvious to me. Simply, in this
- line of work, people are more accepted as to who they are, than
- throughout the rest of society, where much more is made
- about our differences and our sexual preferences. The cast
- and crews of these shows are like family, and everyone is accepted
- and appreciated, and we all learn to live together. It was one of
- the best experiences of my life.
-
- Now, I don't think that there are more gays in competitive or
- recreational skating than throughout the general population, or that
- there is any link between enjoying skating and being gay. I just
- think that more gays might choose to stay with it and make it a career
- professionally, because of the acceptance and community that
- exists in skating (or maybe I should say the arts?).
-
- It's sort of sad that we seem to care so much about this
- (and I debated whether I ought to post this at all, but
- this is what its all about - sharing our experiences...)

- PS - I know of 2 lesser known show skaters who have died of AIDS.
- I was also priviledged to have skated with Brian Pockar in
- "Celebration" - and he died about a year ago. He was a
- really nice guy, and a tremendous talent, and is missed
- by many.
