  16. Well over 50% of the men in ice shows are gay - at least from
  17. my experience as a straight male skater in both the "Ice Capades",
  18. and "Celebration on Ice" (I was outnumbered 7-1 in "Celebration").

  20. The reason for this is fairly obvious to me.  Simply, in this
  21. line of work, people are more accepted as to who they are, than 
  22. throughout the rest of society, where much more is made
  23. about our differences and our sexual preferences. The cast
  24. and crews of these shows are like family, and everyone is accepted
  25. and appreciated, and we all learn to live together.  It was one of
  26. the best experiences of my life.

  28. Now, I don't think that there are more gays in competitive or 
  29. recreational skating than throughout the general population, or that
  30. there is any link between enjoying skating and being gay.  I just 
  31. think that more gays might choose to stay with it and make it a career
  32. professionally, because of the acceptance and community that
  33. exists in skating (or maybe I should say the arts?).

  35. It's sort of sad that we seem to care so much about this
  36. (and I debated whether I ought to post this at all, but
  37. this is what its all about - sharing our experiences...)

  41. PS - I know of 2 lesser known show skaters who have died of AIDS.  
  42.      I was also priviledged to have skated with Brian Pockar in 
  43.      "Celebration" - and he died about a year ago.  He was a 
  44.      really nice guy, and a tremendous talent, and is missed
  45.      by many.
