- Yes, the 55mm is a good lens, but I've found a longer focal length to be
- more useful, like the Nikon 105mm Micro or (less $) the Tokina 90mm macro,
- which has optics as good (maybe better) than Nikon's. It is more useful
- because you can get 1:2 at a distance of about one foot. This makes it
- much easier to approach shy subjects, and avoids awkward situations where
- you can't get maneuver the strobe arm close enough to the lens to get the
- proper lighting. One downside to these lenses is that you'll probably have
- to get a longer dome port to accomodate the longer lens. But I think the
- greater flexibility of the longer lens more than makes up for the extra
- cost.
