  13. Virtually all businesses in Canada are registered for the Goods and
  14. Services Tax (GST) and receive a registration number, which is "R"
  15. followed by nine digits.  This number goes on invoices and cash
  16. register receipts (to allow business purchasing goods and services to
  17. recover the GST they pay), so it's not at all secret.

  19. Included in the 9 digits is a check digit.  Revenue Canada Excise,
  20. which administers the GST, refuses to release the formula for the
  21. check digit, stating that it "relates to an internal procedure for
  22. verifying registration numbers".

  24. I challenge rec.puzzles readers to work out the formula for the check
  25. digit.  If you are in Canada, you can collect GST registration numbers
  26. by simply looking at any receipts you have lying around.  If you're not
  27. in Canada (despite the Distribution: can to this posting), here are some
