- You can get nutritional analyses for the various flavors and brands of
- canned foods (and dry foods) from the manufacturer.
-
- My vets seem fairly unanimous in preferring dry food over canned for most
- cats-- seems to help their teeth and breath, is a lot less trouble overall,
- and you don't run into bacterial overgrowth problems in the summer that can
- give your cat gastrointestinal problems.
-
- The exceptions are cats that don't drink enough water, or can't chew
- dry food adequately-- and there, my vets tend to recommend "soggies"
- (crunchies with water). There are also times when cats quit eating and
- need to be hand-fed -- this is the time for smelly canned cat food or
- favorite table delicacies. And of course, there are cats that are on
- special diets of canned foods like K/D or S/D, prescribed by vets.
-
- When Mom's two cats were alive, she fed canned food exclusively-- mainly
- Friskies and Purina. Her bills were about the same as mine, but I was
- feeding 5-10 cats on dry Iams, Purina Pro-plan and Science Diet. And
- my cats had nicer coats and better breath!
-
- Oh yes, my current crew will pass up a can of Kal-Kan Mealtime for
- Iams dry... irked *ell out of my mom when she gave the cats a
- Christmas present!
