- I have seen bunnies get hairball even with plenty of hay (although hay is
- definitely one factor that helps prevent it). I have never seen a bunny
- get hairball if they get hay, exercise, and chewable papaya tablets with
- amylase. Of course, some rabbits are more prone to hairball than others,
- but I've noticed that rabbits also tend to become more prone to it as
- they grow older--it's no surprise if a rabbit who has never had a
- hairball develops one when it's around five years of age.
-
- Anyway, I'd be cautious about skipping any of the three things that help
- prevent the problem: HAY, EXERCISE, AND PAPAYA TABLETS CONTAINING
- AMYLASE.
-
- By the way, some rabbit pellets (e.g., Manna-Pro "All Purpose") contain
- amylase. Check your feed's label to find out if yours does. I don't
- know if it is a suffient amount, but it is certainly comforting to know
- it's there and helping.

-
- Acidophilus is needed ONLY when a bunny gets diahrrea or stops eating. It
- replaces the gram positive bacteria that are lost when these conditions
- occur. If the bun has neither of these, acidophilus shouldn't be given.
- THE BUN'S OWN SYSTEM SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO MAINTAIN ITS OWN BALANCE.

- Fresh papaya doesn't contain amylase, which is the enzyme that attacks
- the mucous-like material holding the hairball together. So either use
- papaya tablets containing amylase or find some other source for it.
- If you use the tablets (chewable), break them over the bun's food for a
- few days before trying to get him to take them directly.

-
- I've not seen bunnies refuse water with acidophilus, but I agree that
- banana, cooked oatmeal, etc. (anything moist that the rabbit loves) is
- the best way to give acidophilus when it is needed.
